How to Build an Academic Career
Sigfredo Fuentes is an Associate Professor in Digital Agriculture, Food and Wine Sciences at the University of Melbourne. Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences. Professor Fuentes received his Bachelor of Agricultural Sciences from The University of Talca in Chile and his PhD from the Western Sydney University in 2006. Since then, he has worked at the Universities of Adelaide, Technology, Sydney; Western Sydney. His scientific interests ranges from climate change impacts on agriculture, development of new computational tools for plant physiology, food and wine sciences, new and emerging sensor technology, proximal, short and long range remote sensing using Robotics and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. Since 2014, Prof Fuentes have been actively researching in the emerging area of Digital Agriculture, implementing Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning algorithms in different areas of Agriculture, Food and Animal Sciences, which have resulted in around 100 peer-reviewed publications and the invitations as key note speaker at different conferences in the area nationally and internationally.
Daniel Capurro is a Senior Lecturer in Digital Health in the School of Computing and Information Systems at the University of Melbourne. He is part of the Executive Committee of the newly created Centre for the Digital Transformation of Health, a joint project between the University of Melbourne School of Engineering and the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. His research focuses on developing methods to improve the use of clinical data for research which includes reusing data collected in electronic health records to create digital phenotypes and healthcare process mining. Dr. Capurro also has extensive applied experience in health informatics, he was the Chief Medical Information Officer for Chile’s Catholic University healthcare network, and founder of the Chilean National Centre for Health Information Systems, a 5-university state-funded initiative to implement healthcare information interoperability standards and to develop the health informatics workforce in the Chile. Dr. Capurro is a Medical Doctor from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, trained in Internal Medicine, and holds a PhD in Biomedical and Health Informatics from the University of Washington in Seattle.
Dr Bao Nguyen is a lecturer in the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences at The University of Melbourne. She is a clinician (optometrist) and early-career researcher in human visual neuroscience. Her research is primarily focused on using vision to understand changes in the healthy brain across a lifetime, from childhood development through to older adulthood, as well as in ocular disease (e.g. glaucoma), neurological conditions (e.g. migraine), and systemic conditions that can have ocular manifestations (e.g. human immunodeficiency virus infection). Outside of academia, Bao has a keen interest in assisting people with English as a second language, mental health awareness and is a Community Champion for PANDA (Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Australia).

Dr. Carol Huillin
The story of Dr. Hullin is impressive: it starts in La Legua, goes through a post PhD in Artificial Intelligence in Australia, a position at the World Bank, and lead her to be the first dean of a faculty of health sciences at UCT.
She was born in 1970 and grew up in a camp in La Legua. Her story was marked by constant struggle; a fight against hunger, cold, and crime. Her parents were teenagers and Dr. Hullin had to manage on her own by selling candy on buses. From La Legua, her family relocated in a camp in La Florida and finally settled in San Bernardo, where she approached the Church and for the first time in her life, being 14 years old, she read a book: The Bible. She then studied at Caritas Chile, where she worked as a paramedic assistant in Chile. When she was 21, she emigrated to Australia. Here, she studied nursing at RMIT University, and did her clinical practice at Austin Health. Dr. Hullin won a national scholarship for a PhD in Health Informatics at the University of Melbourne and then completed a post-doctorate in Artificial Intelligence. Her curriculum and work led her to be hired by the Australian Government to develop the first clinical informatics center in the country and then, she went to the World Bank to improve, from the perspective of computer science, access to health for the world’s poorest people. Later, Dr. Carol Hullin returned to Chile, was an advisor to the Ministry of Education, and completed a Master’s in Law in PUC, Chile, with the goal of achieving a dignified treatment of people using telehealth and mobile technologies for their care. Dr. Carol Hullin became the first dean of the newly created Faculty of Health Sciences at the Catholic University of Temuco and is currently a senior lecturer in Digital Health at an Australian university, together with the role she has in Chile as the Global Strategic Advisor of the only Latin American Digital Innovation center in the Araucanía region. She is currently a social activist who seeks human equity by developing social, political, and economic innovation within several communities in Chile. Her goal is to be the first indigenous President of Chile in 2030.
